Summer School 2026

In cooperation with Sussex English Academy, The Cambridge Institute is offering an intensive two-week course in August for children and young people aged 11 to 20. The course is available at three levels, B1, B2 and C1, and provides an ideal way to prepare for returning to school at the end of the summer holidays.

Unlike traditional summer camps, the programme focuses on the structured development of all key language skills, including speaking, writing, reading, listening and grammar. Particular emphasis is placed on practical training and active communication. While our aim is to make the best possible use of the Summer School and help participants achieve significant progress, we also make sure that learning remains enjoyable and that there is plenty of fun along the way.

Our programme also prepares students for the Cambridge English exams, giving them the opportunity to complete the course with an internationally recognised certificate. This helps build their confidence while also preparing them for the Austrian centralised school-leaving examination, which follows a very similar format.

Language Development

Our Summer School, unlike many other summer language courses, is a comparatively academically-oriented program. Therefore, we do not include typical activities (such as sports sessions) in the afternoon, but instead focus on linguistic development.

Frequently Asked Questions

You can find important details about the Summer School by clicking on the text blocks. Feel free to contact us if you have any further questions or would like to discuss other topics.

Why take an exam at the end?

At the end of the Summer School, we offer children and teenagers the unique opportunity to take a Cambridge English exam directly at our institute.

A Cambridge English exam is a great way to make learning visible and reinforce what has been learned. The exam preparation is intended to motivate students to work toward a clear goal, thereby enhancing their willingness to learn throughout the entire course. Thanks to the international standard of the Cambridge exams, students receive objective feedback on their English level (B1, B2 or C1) and are also prepared for the format of the Austrian final school exam (Zentralmatura). The globally recognized certificate is a valuable addition to their educational path and helps boost the candidates’ confidence.

The exam is not mandatory but is highly recommended for the reasons mentioned above.

Cambridge B1 Preliminary for Schools

A B1 Preliminary for Schools qualification shows that a student has mastered the basics of English and now has practical language skills for everyday use. B1 Preliminary for Schools is targeted at the same CEFR level as B1 Preliminary but with content aimed at school-age learners rather than adults.

A B1 Preliminary for Schools qualification shows that a student can:

  • read simple textbooks and articles in English
  • write letters and emails on everyday subjects
  • understand factual information
  • show awareness of opinions and mood in spoken and written English
Cambridge B2 First for Schools

A B2 First for Schools qualification shows that a student has the language skills they need to communicate in an English-speaking environment. B2 First for Schools is targeted at the same CEFR level as B2 First but with content aimed at school-age learners rather than adults.

The educational standards in Austria specify B2 as the target level to be achieved for the general university entrance qualification through the Zentralmatura.

A B2 First for Schools qualification shows that students can:

  • communicate effectively face to face, expressing opinions and presenting arguments
  • write clear, detailed English, expressing opinions and explaining the advantages and disadvantages of different points of view
  • follow and understand the news
  • write letters, reports, stories and lots of other types of text
Cambridge C1 Advanced

A C1 Advanced (CAE) certificate is an in-depth, high-level qualification that shows you have the language skills that employers and universities are looking for. C1 Advanced certificate is proof of high-level achievement in learning English.

Preparing for C1 Advanced helps learners develop the skills to make the most of studying, working and living in English-speaking countries.

The C1 Advanced certificate shows that you can:

  • follow an academic course at university level
  • communicate effectively at a managerial and professional level
  • participate with confidence in workplace meetings or academic tutorials and seminars
  • express yourself with a high level of fluency

There is no "for schools" version for the C1 Advanced exams.

Several schools in Vienna select their best students to sit our Cambridge C1 Advanced exams. Taking the C1 Advanced exam before the Matura clearly demonstrates their extra motivation and excellent level of English.

Supervision and Lunch Breaks

Your children will be supervised by us at the Cambridge Institute premises between 08:30 and 17:00. During both class time and breaks, a female and a male trusted staff member will be available.

Please note that we do not provide meals. Your child should therefore bring a snack or packed lunch.

With your permission, your child is welcome to spend the lunch break outside our premises on Mariahilfer Straße. However, please be aware that we do not assume any supervisory responsibility outside the institute.

Our Teachers

All teachers are native English speakers with appropriate teaching qualifications, classroom experience, and mandatory safeguarding training.

For the Summer School, we exclusively employ teachers who are part of the Cambridge Institute Vienna team. Take a look at our team here.

Arrival and pick-up times

Your children can arrive between 08:30 and 09:00 before classes begin at 09:00.

Classes end at 16:30, so you can pick up your children between 16:30 and 17:00.

Schedule

The schedule includes six full hours of teaching per day from Monday to Friday between 09:00 and 16:30, plus breaks.

A supervised lunch break takes place from 12:15 to 13:15, during which the children eat together and, of course, are encouraged to continue speaking English. Supervision during lunch is provided by a native English speaker teacher.

Why is there a price difference between the groups?

The difference in price between the groups is due to the varying course lengths.

The B1 group takes the Cambridge exam on Friday afternoon, which means the course finishes on Friday at midday.

The B2 group has lessons up to and including Friday afternoon.

In addition, the C1 group also has a mock exam on the Saturday between the two weeks of the course.
